Clean and Tricky

Conditions were lined up for what should have been victory at sea. Instead, the wind switched slightly off shore and handed us conditions that we don't often see on the lakes. The guys in the photos are all riding Burly Surfboards (Dale is on a 5'10" Fist Pump, Greg on the 6'7" Thruster, Erik on a 9'4" Logjammer, and me on a 6'0" Mini-Simmons). I intended to do a little shoot on the performance of my boards, however, mother nature did the performing and we just watched in awe. It was a clean and beautiful wave, but oddly enough, very difficult to surf. You had to be in the right place at the right time. The offshore winds made it difficult to get into the wave, and the peak was fairly elusive. Nevertheless, it will stand as one of the more memorable sessions this winter. Thanks to Rich Griffin for freezing his butt off to get the shots. Enjoy.

Most boards I shape are delivered, and then just disappear. On occasion I get to see them in action via photographs, or at times at the beach. The Ghost Knife is a board that I see on a regular basis since Scotty and I surf the same breaks. He has dialed that board in over the last few years, as it is primarily the only board he rides. I just got a few photos of Scott and few others scoring picture perfect waves. The middle photo is a textbook drop, on a perfect wave, yet another reason to know your board and dial it in proper.

So the ritual goes, New Years Day, 9am paddle out. This year turned into a crazy west that pumped all kinds of madness into Holland State Park. This is an event that is truly about the stoke, as the paddle out occurs with or without waves. It's our way to salute the New Year and I can think of no better way to do it. Happy New Year all you lake surfers and also to all of you lake surfers that have found yourself in salty waters, Cheers!

The Perfect Surf Mobile

Recently I decided it was time for a second vehicle as my wife will be needing the car we share for grad school. So, I started digging through craigslist trying to uncover what kind of magic $3000 could afford. To my dismay, the answer to that question is, not much. The cars either have a ridiculous amount of miles on them, or in the words of the craiglist ad is a "GREAT car, just needs engine." The other issue that I was contending with is that cars just don't have the personality today that they used to. Sure, you can drive them for 300,000 miles, but they all look the same. Clearly this is not a matter of practicality, but when searching for your surf mobile, style plays a significant role. This begs the question, what makes the perfect surf mobile? I have compiled a list of the four necessary ingredients to consider when purchasing the perfect surf mobile.1. it must get you to the beach with out breaking down, period.2. it must be able to safely accommodate your board of choice (loggers you will need either a long empty vehicle or a roof rack).3. it must have a heater that works (very important for cold water surfers).4. it must exude the proper amount of personality.After considering these four issues, I finally came up with the perfect ride for a Michigan surfer and came in under budget.

On the scale of epic, surfing a chest to head high pumping swell on any of the islands surrounding Cloud Nine (Philippines) would rank in at Richter. I pulled waves at Cloud Nine, Jacking Horse (such a fitting name), Quiksilver, and Rock Island depicted above. There is really no way to describe what it is like to surf there, other than to say "Is this real?" While paddling out today at Pier Marquette in my 6/4 with 45 degree water slapping me in the face it seems so far away, but even more amazing. If you haven't thrown down and surfed some ridiculous destination at the risk of malaria, food poisoning, or banditos, I strongly recommend that 2012 is your year to go.

Just wrapped this little guy up. I have a traditional keel, quad, and thruster setup that I am going to try on this board. 5'10" x 22.5" x 2.75" The V bottom should help me figure out right away which setup will work best. Loose and skatey is the name of the game.

This board has been a collaborative effort with a lot of different surfers, and the shape itself is kind of a mix up between a fish / groveler, Mini-Simmons and Lord Board. To some it probably looks like a red headed step child, but I believe that it might be just what the doctor ordered. The board is designed to make the most of lake waves, which move slow, give you enough time for a few good pumps, and a solid turn before it fizzles out. Also, I have recently learned that I seem to habitually pump my fist when I'm stoked. Hence the name, Fist Pump.

Making some headway on a board order that is going north of the bridge. It was super sunny when I shot these images so the light makes these boards look like neon. It's actually lime green, which is the crazy thing about resin tints, they really illuminate in the sunlight and when they get wet. I am very stoked with how the color laid out on this board!

Got a couple calls late in the day about Grand Haven being glassy and hollow at one foot. That is really good news when you have the opportunity to head an hour and a half south. Kerry and I found a really good peak south of where everyone normally surfs. Punchy, waist to chest, a little disorganized, but a lot of fun. This photo was taken as it was building, we had a two hour window, and then it shut down. That's why I love the lake, every swell is a ghost. Everyone talks about it, but nobody really sees it.

Musings on how the craft we ride define us as individuals.

Indeed, our equipment is a mean to an end, our way to express ourselves on the canvas of a breaking wave. Each one of us have our own standards when it comes to define our surfing style. And it all gets down to the way we move and the way we stand. It is only a matter of rhythm, almost of musical preferences…

The modern surf crafts we have access to are instruments to play our part on the waves we surf, and the choice just gets better and better. So much is happening lately, that whatever we have in mind is available, and shapers constantly develop what we haven’t yet imagined. It is also why there is no such thing as “retro”, unless you surf a vintage board. All contemporary surfboards are improved by experience and years of shaping, even if they are directly inspired by older crafts.
I think my quiver not in terms of conditions but in terms of style. Each board, should I shape it or order it, has a special way and purpose. Most of them could eventually be a “one board quiver”. It allows me to travel light.

It also gives me a very deep understanding of the possibilities of each shape, because I will have to face all type of conditions with that one board I picked from the rack. My progression curve is steeper, and the evolution of my surfing style more complete, when I change to a board that is in every way different to the other one.
And the point being to have as much fun as possible, each instrument I choose will provide that stoke I am looking for, because each one will allow me to express myself the way I want to.
There is no right or wrong board. The important thing is to choose in total honesty and consciousness, considering ability and personal pursuit. I like motionless trim, speed down the line, carving; and my boards respond to those special features that define my style. For that very reason, I rule out some boards and select others, and my quiver is in constant movement in search of my own personal rhythm.

Someone else would do it differently, but the process should always focus on our basic needs as surfers. The mistake would be to think that any board would match any style and quest.
When I started surfing, choice was not really available. The surfing landscape was not varied at all; surf shops all had pretty much the same equipment; few shapers dared to step aside from the mainstream plan-shapes. It hasn’t been easy, but those days are over now.

Surfers today live a creative time. We look back on the past decades for clues. We constantly learn from our predecessors and their transcript experience. It is what makes surf a culture.
However, there is no place for pointless regrets: we can’t go backwards anyway, and what we have ahead of us is big and exciting.

have your cake and eat it too

Mitch and I took a gamble on an iffy forecast and scored some really fun longboard waves. They were breaking about waist high and as they pitched the pink in the sunrise caught the white water. It looked like frosting on a cake. The color didn't replicate in the the image, and it was so grainy that I just desaturated it. The water seems to have warmed up a bit and the sunshine didn't hurt either. It was the best way to start the day.

I have been steadily working on this patch work resin pattern which could be described as similar to a Mark Rothko painting. Hence the name Untitled #2, as none of Rothko's paintings ever had a more descriptive name than this. I am very pleased with this board and put a lot of heart into it. This weekend was a total surfari around Michigan. I built a bed in my car, loaded up boards, packed a cooler and followed the swell. I surfed some of the best waves I have seen in quite some time and shared them with both new and old friends. Props go out to Marcus, Shawn, Stefan, and the rest of the Minnesota chargers.

Dawn patrol is my favorite session of the day. You get up when it is still dark, check the buoy and weather data, and with your best judgment head to the break you think will work. This was kind of a guess, the buoy was up, but from what I could tell the swell wasn't filling in. We headed out anyhow, and under a full moon caught some super clean peelers. The bottom photo is Mitch on pretty little slider. Seven of us shared waves for a couple hours and then it was gone.

I got the phone call late Sunday from Jordan. I had noticed that the color charts for Superior were going richter Monday and Tuesday, but thought little about making the drive. A five minute conversation changed all that, and 24 hours later I was standing in front of Alona Bay. The first thing I thought was, "Am I on the Northwest coast?" Rock faces greeted heavy surf and it was magic hour. The water temperature was about 68 degrees, which is unheard of for Lake Superior. We surfed until our arms fell off, stoked all the way. The wave was heavy and bumpy, and so clear! Thanks to Heather for shooting photos, Upper Canada cheers to you and the boys!

I have been busy wrapping up a few boards so I can hang up my tools for the fall swells. This is a 6'5" thruster 20.5" wide and about 2.5" thick. I was so happy with my 6'7" thruster template that I pulled in all the dims to give me something more ocean specific. It looks like the ocean isn't the only place I will be surfing this board. Alona Bay has a pretty epic forecast that I don't think I can miss. I can think of no better way to cut the teeth on this board than in a Lake Superior swell.

Working hard to finish April's board up and get it in the water. Triple six ounce bottom and triple six ounce deck make this one durable board with nice amount of weight. The lamination is finished and as soon as it cures hotcoat, hardware, and gloss coat to come.

Classic 9'0" Single fin. Flat through out the belly, concave in the nose, full volume out to the rails. There is a bit more rocker than what is common in the classic log which should make this board a wave catching machine. EPS core with a beautiful cedar stringer. Did I say Classic already???

Photographers know the hour before sunset as magic hour because of the soft light. This isn't always true in Michigan as we have a huge blanket of clouds covering the sun most of the year. However, sometimes the surf turns on around this time and produces some really nice shaped waves. Here's my neighbor Dale enjoying magic hour on Lake Michigan.

Ben's Bob was laminated this past weekend. White with black logos, it looks clean and streamlined. It still needs a hotcoat and hardware, but is nearing completion. The images you are looking at appear distorted because I was using a fisheye lens to shoot them. Radical all the way around.

Novel ideas and White surfboards

After making this exact same board for Erik, I couldn't resist making one for myself. 6'6" x 21" x 2 5/8" For a change I decided to make a white board, which I was really happy that I did on this shape. The white really forces you to look at the shape and how the lines blend. I am very happy with this template, loosely taken from a Firewire Dominator. Should be fun to surf, just have to wait for this ice to thaw...

Window of Opportunity

Once in awhile we get a thaw in January that actually clears out the lake. Since the ice hasn't been as bad as past years, we had a window of opportunity this past Sunday. Shoulder high, fresh water goodness. Here's Mitch sinking his teeth into a good line with a Burly Mini-Bob. The fog was rolling in and I was just able to get a few shots before the entire pier wasn't visible.

Shotguns for Surfboards

This has to be a first. This Christmas I received a gift from the Black Lab as sort of a thank-you / Merry Christmas gift for shaping the Ghost Knife. Scotty gave me a classic pump action Ithaca Shotgun. If a gifted gun isn't a sign of gratitude, then I don't know what is. That man is ripping it up on the Knife and turning on a wave like he never has before. The stoke is getting passed all around this year. I want to say thanks to Scotty, Erik, Ryan, and everyone else for making this a great year of shaping!

Surfing in a Slurpee

Erik, J.T. and I got some of the last few waves of the season. We surfed for 2+ hours in 15 degree air temps and 33 degree water temps. There was slush in the water killing some of the swell, it was like surfing in a Slurpee. What we lacked in waves, we made up for in stoke. Thanks fellas and Happy New Year!

Color Swatches

Here's a sample of the pigments and tints I have in stock. The opaque colors in the first photo will not change by adding more or less pigment. The translucent colors in the second photo will change, becoming deeper and darker as more tint is added.

The cool thing about ordering a custom board, is precisely that, it's custom. Shape, colors, fin setup, and even the logos that you want glassed in it are totally your call. The end result is a board that is truly one of a kind.

Color in Cursive

So, I attempted my first resin swirl last night. It is far more difficult that just laying out color and mixing it around. Unless you are a veteran at this technique it's hard to know what the final product will turn into. Overall I am happy with the results and with the how seamless the cutlap came together, but I have some work to do before I can earn the title of Swirlmaster J.

Just received a batch of blanks and fins from my latest California trip. I can now shape anything from a 6'0" fish to a 9'8" log. This photo represents about half of it. I have multiple colors of thruster, quad, and twin keel, and single fins in stock as well. My pigment assortment has grown considerably as well with a new selection of earth tones. Let the shaping begin!

I just delivered my first pair of boards to Third Coast Surf Shop. Ryan now carries two variations off of a longboard template I have been riding over the past year, called the Log Jammer and the Log Splitter. The 9'2" Log Jammer (the blue and orange board) has a blunt nose, rounded pin tail, with a pronouned tail rocker to help hold the board in a wave while cross stepping. The 9'0" Log Splitter is a narrower board with pronounced vee in the rounded pin tail for wave manueverability. Thanks Ryan, It's an honor to have a couple boards in your shop.

Epoxy Dreams

Crazy things happen in the shaping bay, especially when you have been huffing epoxy all weekend. The secret 6'6" gets a bottom laminate in coke bottle green. The deck patch is next up with a design that came to me in a dream. This board is a complete mystery, I don't even know what is going to happen next!?

Ghost Knife, Yes!!!

The Ghost Knife finally went home this Friday night. Upon seeing the board for the first time Scott gave a resounding fist pump - knee up, with a "Yes!!!" This man is stoked and I can't wait to see him surf it. It was an absolute pleasure shaping you this board Scotty, I hope that it serves you well.

Ghost Knife Laminate

Just finished laminating the deck patch on this monster. The bottom is a gun metal gray and the deck is a lighter smoke gray. A slick white pin line will separate the two. I have one more layer of cloth to go on the deck and might add a little more pigment to make the deck a touch darker. If the Sportel's could weigh in here I would appreciate it. Should I go darker on the deck or keep it the way it is???

Shaped Ghost Knife

It slices, it dices, it juliennes. This board will have plenty of wave bite with a slight V in the pin tail, softer rails transitioning to sharp, and a nose concave just in case, i don't know, someone wants to walk the plank.

Shaped Secret

The Secret is shaped minus the single to double concave running out the tail. It's a very clean and simple shape, I can see why it is such a hit for Firewire. To quote the guy I am shaping this for "We don't need no stinkin' squash tails."

10'6" Ghost Knife Outline

This board is for one of the most stoked surfers I know. After I drew the outline to this board, I realized it looked a lot like an aquarium fish I had as a kid, called a Ghost Knife. The blank has been skinned and the outline cut. Time to start shaping in the rocker and the rails.
